A school with more shade, a garden that supports local wildlife, and a greener street can all begin with a simple choice: selecting the right tree and committing to its care. With this in mind, GCCjoined Fundación Grupo México and other participating organizations in the 2026 School Reforestation Initiative to bring trees to schools, families, and communities across Chihuahua.
The initiative received 10,000 plants and trees. On September 11, approximately 3,000 were distributed at GCC’s Chihuahua Plant to schools, neighbors, and members of the GCC community. Two days later, 5,000 were taken to FECHAC Fest at Chihuahua’s Ciudad Deportivafor a public tree giveaway.

Choosing suitable species is an essential part of the effort. The donated trees are native species included in the City of Chihuahua’s Plant Palette, a guide to selecting plants suited to the local climate and the conditions of each site. The city notes that choosing the right species can provide shade, improve soil conditions, and offer food and shelter for local wildlife.
Bringing trees to schools also creates an opportunity for students, teachers, and families to take part in their care. Planting is only the first step. Choosing an appropriate location, monitoring each tree’s growth, and meeting its watering needs can help it become a lasting part of its surroundings. In Chihuahua’s climate, caring for trees while using water responsibly is especially important.

This initiative builds on other efforts in which GCC has worked with Fundación Grupo México and local partners to create greener spaces. GCC’s Chihuahua Plant environmental team has contributed to the planning and execution of reforestation activities that bring together the company, educational institutions, and the community.
We thank Fundación Grupo México, FECHAC, the participating organizations, and everyone who took a tree home. With the right place to grow and ongoing care, each tree is an opportunity to make Chihuahua greener for today’s community and future generations.
